Please help put an end to puppy farming, backyard breeding and the puppy trade
If you’re looking to buy a puppy or dog, there are really only two ethical ways to go about it, and that is to adopt from a rescue or pound, or buy from a responsible breeder who does not need to advertise on social media or common classified sites, alongside second-hand goods, because he/she does not irresponsibly breed puppies purely for profit. And certainly no one in their right mind should buy puppies from pet stores or supermarket car parks.
Dog breeding is a multi-million pound industry, much of it having nothing whatsoever to do with concern for ‘breed conservation’ or the love of the dogs, and choosing responsible breeders would eventually put an end to backyard breeding and the mass production of dogs bred on licensed and unlicensed farms because, without the demand, the supply would cease.
In an ideal world, puppies should only be purchased from a breeder who invites the buyer into his/her own home. Puppies should be seen interacting with the mother who the breeder genuinely treats as a family pet living inside the home, and not stuck outside in a kennel or another part of the property.
- A responsible breeder will ask a buyer lifestyle and suitability questions and expect questions in return.
- A responsible breeder will reserve the right to refuse a sale if he/she considers a buyer unsuitable.
- A responsible breeder does not import or export dogs and puppies.
- A responsible breeder does not have an endless supply of puppies.
- A responsible breeder does not sell sick puppies.
Puppies bought from breeders like Little Rascals are not being ‘rescued’; there is no such thing. It just condemns a puppy’s parents to a life of incarceration, mindless boredom and, very often, physical and mental pain.
Little Rascals have had years of experience cultivating a false exterior of responsible, ethical dog breeding. Their commercial puppies cannot legitimately be described as ‘home bred‘ because they are not born and reared in anyone’s home (the definition of ‘home‘ being where someone normally lives and sleeps – it’s doubtful the proprietors or any of their employees live and sleep in kennels).
To date no one has come forward to say they have been invited to view the off-limit areas where breeding dogs are permanently kept, and Little Rascals’ ‘sister kennels‘ in Ireland and their other ‘suppliers’ remain a convenient mystery. Puppies should never be purchased from breeders who are unable or unwilling to show where those puppies are born and reared.
Little Rascals’ current loyal supporters might consider that they are regarded as equally responsible for preserving a culture where a completely irresponsible and callous attitude exists towards dogs; dogs which are considered to be nothing more than commodities by the Swindells and Dickens; a means to make money. As David Hamilton put it, ‘The dogs pay the bills and my mortgage‘. In other words, dogs allow these people to live a lifestyle most of us would need to work an 80 hour week to achieve. There is no other reason involved, it’s pure greed.

All too often buyers say that they cannot wait to buy a dog from a responsible breeder who breeds ethically and doesn’t have an endless supply of ‘take your pick’ puppies, or say they cannot afford the price charged by a responsible breeder who has undertaken expensive health tests and bred puppy in the home; they want a cheap ‘designer‘ or ‘pedigree‘ and they want it now. The harsh reality is that if they cannot afford to buy a puppy from an ethical breeder then they cannot afford a dog in the first place, and an ‘instant’ puppy supply comes at a price – to the breeding parents.
Most people would agree that dogs are not commodities. They are living members of our families, to be afforded the same consideration for their mental and physical well-being as any other family member, and yet it is amazing how many people think absolutely NOTHING of buying puppies from social media and classified sites, such as Facebook, Gumtree and Preloved, IN SPITE of all the information openly available warning against the ethics of buying from dog breeders who need to sell in that way.
For every puppy sold, another takes its place, so please spare a thought for the parents of that puppy, who usually spend their entire lives in a cage or a kennel solely for the benefit of the breeders. There is no chair or lap for them to curl up on, no cuddles or affection, no walks in the park, no treats, no mental stimulation; only a bland, boring, sad and often painful existence just to provide a cute puppy.
Also consider that a bitch in heat does not always instantly and willingly accept just any male chosen for her; it’s a complete fallacy, often resulting in forced breeding or artificial insemination, which might not be undertaken by a qualified vet.
For the love of dogs, please remember, only YOU can put an end to the puppy trade.
